Thank you, Berries!!!

  • Jul. 19th, 2009 at 9:15 AM
Yesterday, Joey received a book that we paid for last week from her Berries teacher. She told me that the homework for this week is to fill in a sheet of paper full of questions pertaining to stories inside that book. Yesterday was the FIRST time she sat inside her study for an entire 2 hours flipping through the book, reading through the stories, doing her homework. Yesterday was the first time, she shared with us the interesting details of a CHINESE book.

Thank you, Berries!! Its so great to see her reading chinese book, without any nagging effort from me.

Running a flu

  • Jul. 19th, 2009 at 9:00 AM
I am running a flu, bad throat, phelgmy cough and itchy nose. Body aches have been there for quite a while, which I am not sure whether its due to the flu or the growing body. I am going to visit a Pandemic preparedness clinic (PPC) nearby and I hope its not H1N1.

Reference :

MOH helpline - 1800 333 9999
Dedicated ambulance - 993
KKH women's clinic - 6293 4044

I am feeling guilty and worried. Yesterday, we had my mother-in-law and brother-in-law over for dinner. Both of them are with some health issues. I was still quite alright yesterday, except for some itchy throat developed in the late afternoon and I avoided having dinner with them on the same table. Late night, the symptoms deteriorated and this morning, the itchy nose and phelgmy cough add in. :(

I pray that its not H1N1. I pray that everyone at home will be safe from it.

So long, and thanks for all the fish

Not that she cooked any particularly nice fish dish.

We just saw our maid off, back to Philippines. I’m glad she’s gone.

Short version - she’s been sick and just discharged from hospital, and weak and wants to be taken care of by her family, and doesn’t want to be a burden to us, and begged to be sent home asap, tonight if possible.

So please, please, please send someone decent our way. We’ve been pretty unlucky with maids so far. If you know of anyone you’d recommend, please let me know.

Offensive

Been wanting to blog this for some time. I saw this banner a few weeks back, and I find it highly offensive. Any god who threatens termination (not just death, but eternal punishment too) on the basis of you refusing to believe in him is no better than a petty gangster. The fact that there are so many people who believe this crap is quite scary.

Over the past year, I've been listening to podcasts from The Atheist Experience and The Non Prophets on iTunes. And finally all the objections to religion (Christianity in particular) that I've always felt inside but could never articulate coherently were laid bare by the hosts of the show. The show doesn't go out to discredit religion, but basically they invite theists to call in to present their case. The callers are taken seriously, and the arguments put forth are assessed objectively and the hosts try to keep the call unbiased and civil, though one must acknowledge that religion is an emotional topic, and some of the calls don't end very well.

I appreciate how the hosts try to arrest the fallacies and inconsistencies in the arguments put forth by the theists who call/write in before the theists manage to build multiple layers of fallacious arguments in an attempt to hide behind the shroud of confusion. Along the way, they also try to explain why they object to particular arguments or statements made by the theists. I especially find the explanations by Matt Dillahunty fantastic. He has a very logical and systematic way of addressing the issues raised.

Mani + Pedicure for 370PHP

  • Jul. 18th, 2009 at 6:44 PM
I gotta boast. I just completed my mani + pedicure for 370PHP & that's like 12SGD??? Wahahahha. It's quality & I love it. Am definitely going back. They're quite good too. The lady cleaned my feet cuticles so thoroughly & I had 2 ladies attending to me - one for feet & another for hand.

Nice. I even had a shoulder massage after that.

This is one of the many reasons why I love it here.

Whee!

back to being a boblet

  • Jul. 18th, 2009 at 3:50 PM
I've been trying to grow my hair out for a really long time.

And when I say a long time, I probably only mean about six months but the problem with me is I just have so little patience for things like hair and nails and yada yada.

BUT even without the patience, I wanted to look pretty and feminine like my friends - I mean, who doesn't want to look prettier eh? I've often been envious of friends with beautiful, long or wavy locks so I thought, hey! I'll give it a go and see if I can make myself look more feminine too.

The last time I went for a trim was just a few weeks ago. I asked the stylist to just give my hair a trim and had to really bite my lip the entire time. I was THIS close to bursting out with a I WANT IT ALL OFF! remark. She must have read my mind coz she kept telling me to be patient and that it's good to be different sometimes. And that if I REALLY wanted a bob later, it would be easy to change my mind.

Well, that didn't last long, did it. Something like 3 weeks later and I'm frantically dialing for an available stylist on a Saturday morning.

Hubba dropped me off at the hairydresser's after brunch for my very impromptu appointment with Louis - a new stylist I've met at Toni & Guy's whom I really like coz he rides a BMC.

J: So are you ready for me to chop my hair off, Hubba?
A: The question, darling, is are you ready. Not me.
J: But I was trying to look prettier and more feminine! I won't look that way no more if I chop, ya know.

His response?

Darling. Look at your toes. Do you really think I married you for looking feminine?

I BURST OUT LAUGHING!!

Sigh, I guess he's right. So I'm back to ma boblet!

i love tokyo and tokyo loves me

  • Jul. 18th, 2009 at 3:12 PM
i've been pretty much away from livejournal coz my computer at home is still kaput and i have zero time at work to slack infront of LJ so forgive me if i'm not up to date on what's happening and don't be surprised if you suddenly get a deluge of comments from me when i actually find time and a computer to scroll through all your posts.

i've also been away in my favourite city in the world, Tokyo (yes new york fell to second place coz an 18 hour flight and the subsequent "friendly" customs checks can pretty much kill any enthusiasm) for work. YES! they finally send me to some place cool like Tokyo and no longer KL! However, i was pretty much stressed out for my trip coz i was travelling with my big boss and she's a very demanding person. i once sat through a 2hr session with her after her China trip with my exec, listening to a detailed list of "what went wrong" with my exec so much so that i wasn't looking forward to Tokyo at all! everyone in office came by my desk the day i was supposed to fly off, and they either (1) wished me luck or (2) told me not to stress out so much. they all knew what my boss was like so it wasn't very reassuring to say the least!

Terminal 3 at Changi has a huge ass cigar shop. the salesgirl was surprised to see me wander in asking for Cohibas. they are half the price of what we get at St James! we should celebrate soon ;)

I love Tokyo )

Pumps

Converse pumps that are oh-so-cute

I hope that Converse and Cole Hann will always be owned by Nike because I do love the shoes from these brands. I have been wearing my Cole Hann pumps to death and I am half worried that it will die out too quickly on me.

Being around people at Nike who are shoe or sneakers fanatics is a good/bad thing, depending on how you look at it. I had a co worker that owned over a hundred pairs of Nike sneakers and many others that have stashes of shoes underneath their tables - guessing it is because it is already overflowing in their shoe closets at home. But I have started to appreciate shoes a lot more these days. I look for shoes that are comfy, versatile and nice (in my opinion). Instead of buying many pairs of cheap shoes, I now prefer to invest in a few good pairs and wear them regularly - just like handbags!

Over at Leftfoot, I found the cutest pair of Converse pumps. These are available in the U.S and are imported from Japan. There were 3 color options - brown/white, black/black and red/beige. I took awhile deciding on the color and then the sizing! I think these will match well with skinny jeans - although I don't wear mine super tight skinny! I am hoping that I can break these babies in before my Europe trip!

Melt in the mouth Waggyu beef

I'm not sure if offensive to post raw beef here :P But this was truly a platter of melt in your mouth goodness!
It was funny how E was telling me about this restaurant when we walked past it because my Dad made reservations for us to have dinner for the combined birthdays. And I am jolly glad he did.

The wagyu beef platter is simply amazing. It sizzles on the grill to a perfect medium raw and it is so tasty that you will just need a sprinkle of salt and black pepper to bring out the full flavors. The grilled veggies (pumpkin, eggplant, shrooms, carrots, asparagus, corn) tasted yummy too. We ordered an additional platter of pork which was good but not as excellent as the beef. I can't describe the wagyu other than the fact that it simply melts in your mouth - no matter which part of the beef that you savor, it's consistent.

I think I will be back for seconds but just once in awhile because it is quite pricey.

Day 247 - San Francisco (Friday)

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 9:39 PM
Every month or so, the company holds a TGIF event at the dining commons on a Friday evening. There are food, snacks and drinks both alcoholic and not. Each TGIF has a theme of some sort. We had a couple of karaoke ones, and a Bingo one. It's an opportunity for everyone in the company to pop by and let their hair down, to mingle a bit and have a good time. Very nice for building morale.

Today, to celebrate the launch of the Monkey Island Special Edition (or MISE for short), we had a pirate theme. It was one of the most crowded TGIF's I've been to. The picture sucks because I forgot to bring my camera, and had to use my mobile phone.

Those who got there early got free gifts, like pirate hats and inflatable swords. Everyone was feeling a bit high as MISE was received very well by the public. Metacritic has the game rated at 89%, which is really good. Not to mention that the game is getting lots of love from fans.

Even better, I managed to score some swag from the event: A neat little pirate hat, a chest full of chocolate doubloons stamped with the Monkey Island logo, and even more badges. The T-shirt is crew gear for the team that made the game. Since I'm part of the team now, I got one too, even though I didn't do anything. Score!

Hawaiian ruby guava

  • Jul. 18th, 2009 at 12:49 PM

I love all scents fruity and citrusy. In fact, my friend once noted that I am like a friggin' fruit market with the amount of citrus shampoo, moisturizers and scents that I pile on. Well, not exactly pile on but everything is related to an orange peel or mango mandarin scent.

TS sent over the a set of the nicest smelling candle, solid perfume (which looks like a lip balm) and body butter and it was a scent that was appropriately me :) I especially appreciated the candle because I love scented candles!
