money is good..

Got this from mamemo's lj.. (note, not written by her kids)

How would u react if your child wrote a compo like this?

Click on image if you can't read this clearly..

Oh man..couldn't help laughing yet I think I'll be flabberghasted if I were the teacher or the parent..I thought the 2nd compo was kinda imaginative and the student did sorta keep to the required topic..The teacher was actually gonna give him/her a B- but changed it to a C+...

Just now while chatting with meganmacy and talking about these 2 compos, Mong was telling me about her own experience when she was a teacher. One of her students apparently wrote this sentence ..
"Water deep, fish got more.."

ahh i choked on my lemon water while reading it. ouch throat pain. i swear if i were a teacher, i'd be laughing at these crazy compos all day lor. that's why i'm not one. my roommate's bf teaches 5th grade history (11 year olds i think) and he brings in the papers to grade when we're at the laundromat and he lets me read some. aiyoh so funny. and they use ghetto lingo too. jialat. you'll realize that their compos are mostly sentences they rem from tv shows.

if im the teacher, i'll probably vomit blood..imagine, most of the compos are prob of this calibre hehe.. That's why Im not a teacher. I don't think i have the patience and willpower...

Sounds like someone who thinks in Chinese but writes in English.
Apr. 26th, 2004 06:14 am (UTC)
u referrin to the water/fish sentence right? Yeah..that's what Mong said too. Most chinese ed kids will write like this..I remember my chinese compo used to be the other way round and my teacher tellin me constantly that i cant write the way i think in english..

oh man..I guess kids tend to be honest and tend to be more honest with their feelings. I'm not surprised if there are more of such essays ard..

It's q sad actually..for them to have such cynicism in life and such a young age..If im a parent reading the essay, i probably will have to evaluate myself and think of what i can do to change his negative outlook..easier said than done though..

After my A levels, I did relief teaching for 3 months at a neighbourhood sec sch and I got a lot of these "compos" from the normal tech kids. I zapped some and still have them with me.

But......how to mark such compos?!!

Re: Essays
u should post some of it up hehe..

i think compos are really tough to mark..the content itself is already so.... In such cases, would you think of contacting the parents and finding more abt the child?

I'm weird, (and maybe because I'm really a teacher by profession) but I didn't find this to be funny. I found it to be rather disturbing actually. Grammar and Language, I would pass this child for it, but content, I would worry for the child.

This child has seen waaaay too much of how hurtful the world can be, and it's sad to see innocence lost in such a way. How old is this child anyway? I think he/she may need to see a counsellor soon.

PS: I stumbled across your journal though another LJer and was captivated by Aidan. ;)

yeah...i know if it was my kid writing this, i'll b very worried. the kid sounds way too cynical and u can sorta tell what kinda environment he's growin up in based on what he writes. So u arent weird..

u are a teacher right?

Apr. 26th, 2004 08:47 am (UTC)

if my kid wrote that, i'd shoot the kid and take the life insurance money. after all, (s)he wouldn't need it anymore.
Apr. 26th, 2004 07:30 pm (UTC)
the first compo would worry me, not because it is frivolous and badly written, but it could mean the kid could possibly be suffering from some kinda trauma from the situation of his family.

some of my kids play down how they feel by writing this way too, and after i speak to them, they open up and really let out whats torturing them inside, and it can be very painful to read. :/
Apr. 26th, 2004 09:15 pm (UTC)
i concur..U can tell from the content of his compo that his home environment isn't v good and the child is basically writing how he feels abt it..

Tough eh..as a teacher, u gotta play lotsa roles including a counsellor. But do u stop there? I mean..once u find out the problems that the child may have, what can be done to help? Not much right?
