Dec. 26th, 2004

I guess most of you guys probably read/heard abt the massive quake that hit parts of Asia and how badly countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka ,Thailand & Maldives were impacted..

Irene moonberry and her boyfriend Eric flew to Surabaya just 2 days ago for her sister's wedding..I tried calling her on her handphone but it was not in use. Don't wanna sound like an alarmist but please pray that she, Eric and her family are fine..

Hope that if any of your family members or friends are in that part of Asia too..they escape unscathed too..

Yeah...i thought about her just now when i was in my sis place, watching the non-stop news on cable tv...

i guess (and hope) she is just in the more inland area (and that i saw the buildings look rather intact...just have broken windows)...may be just due to that networks of electricity/power/phone line/mobile all not functioning...

yeah..im trying not to worry too much and hoping that she and her family are fine. Maybe her friends in the US will have better luck contacting her coz they may know her Indonesia no. but like u said, the phone lines may not be working..

I am rather shocked to know how big an area is affected...since i cannot link sri lanka and india with indonesia in my mind (my geography is bad...). Here we cannot see anything other than some borrow footage from an asian tv station (i don;t know how to differentiate those language)...and what we see here is just the aftermath. seaside village in phuket (or indonesia) immersed in water...rubbish everywhere and some more inland buildings with broken window, but the whole building stand upright. Not even any footage on s.india...

surabaya is in the middle of java and the east of sumatra, should be quite safe la... mebbe she doesnt have roaming.

anyways, was quite shocked at the amount of devastation and death that was a result of this quake. and in less than 24 hours. God knows what will be the final count... sigh...

Just read from Mr Brown's site that his mom-in law's maid's newly built house in surabaya was destroyed..thats y i was more worried..I think it is more likely that the coastal area was affected. I just hope they didn't choose to have the wedding at one of the resorts or ard the coastal area..

The boyfriend asked if Moonberry was a "real" friend or one of my online friends. I said even if I do know her from online, she's a better friend than some of my real ones.

I really hope she's fine. :/

ikwym..for some of the lj pals, you read so much abt their lifes that u seem to know them v well and they too try to be 'involved' too with yours..

Irene did wanna meet with most of u guys..she was saying that there were a few in Singapore who comments so regularly that she wanna place a face to the lj names but coz it was so rushed, i couldnt get hold of everyone in time (plus i didnt hv ur no :P)..

am hoping she's alright too..

Our good friend returned to Singapore for Christmas break on 23 Dec from Sri Lanka.

He was at our place hanging out yesterday when he saw the news on Sri Lanka...one of the beaches hit was in front of his apartment block!

Thank God!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for MB, j-hi and her family too. If it's any consolation, I spoke to a pal in Surabaya this morning. The damage doesn't sound quite as bad as in other parts of Indonesia.

Man, it's a tragic way to end 2004. Despite all our technological advances, the human race remains extremely vulnerable to the forces of nature. It's a humbling experience. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of all the victims, and I wish all those in the affected regions a safe journey.

Ben was asking me, and I told him Surabaya should hopefully be more okay than some of the other places... we will pray for her too, till she checks back in...
