cooking mama..not!

I wish I know how to cook..

Hmm, actually I can cook, just not very well. Was forced to learn how to cook when I was studying overseas and had to take turns with the housemates to make dinner. I'd almost set the kitchen ablaze on one occasion. Did something really duh. I'd placed the electric kettle on the stove thinking that all kettles must be exactly like the one I used at home. The kettle caught fire and thankfully, my housemates were around to help me put it out! Word soon got around and I got teased quite abit about my kitchen skills :P

When I was a stay-at-home mom, I tried to be a good wifey and made dinner as often as I could. After a few months or so, the other half waved the white flag and suggested rather diplomatically that he would tarpao food home everyday so that I could 'relax'. Oh well, at least I tried. I think Aidan suffered the most..When he was able to eat solids, I prepared the same broccoli and fish porridge almost every weekday (we eat out during the weekends) for almost a year. Thankfully, the boy wasn't as particular as his dad and wallop everything up happily. And his favourite veg is still broccoli :P I'm really blessed that I have a child that ♥ food! Watching him eat is such a joy :D

But I do envy others who are able to whip up fabulous dishes and bake fantastic creations that can pass off as work of art. mengchooMong is one great example..especially after seeing her delightful cupcakes with all that colorful trimmings and having tasted her cooking (do check out her blog). Trust me, I'm not proud at all that I'm that undomesticated. For those wives out there who are as inept as me in the kitchen, do you sometimes feel kinda 'lacking'? There are times when I wish I can surprise hub with a wonderfully cooked meal but it will probably be more of a nightmare for him. I have come to accept the fact that some people are naturally talented in the kitchen and I'm just not one of them. I'm sure this book ain't gonna help me much either.

When we bought this apartment and refurbished it, we totally skipped the kitchen..We have 2 kitchens,a dry and a wet one. I left both areas untouched..the design was rather blah but still acceptable. Now I kinda regretted not doing it up. Thought of getting an oven so that I could learn to bake (yeah, kinda influenced by Mong) but there's no space for it. Wanted to do up the kitchen but again with the enbloc issue still pending, it may not be a good idea to spend money on the apartment *sigh*..Oh well, maybe I'll just ask Mong to invite me over when she bakes and try to learn from her. A domestic goddess I'll never be but oh well, at least I can say that I'd tried. May end up messing things up even more though.

Anyway..here's an in-paper promo that I'd pitched to sponsors and we'd gotten great prizes for it. It's a home makeover contest and we're starting with a kitchen do-over first! We're giving away ..not 1, but 3 makeovers worth up to $15k each..appliances included!! The first promo ad was out last week and the response has been great so far. There are 2 more ads that we'll be running and I'm hoping that entries will continue to pour in. Personally, this is one contest I would like to win because I really won''t mind a spanking new kitchen! If you know of anyone whose kitchen is due for a makeover, watch out for the ad this Sat! Oh, and next month, the makeover theme will be the living room with furnishings from Air Division! How cool is that?

no lah, i have 2 small kitchens. actually, it was the previous owner who build the 2nd wet kitchen so that the fumes from the cooking can be contained. i liked the concept so i didn't change it at all..but i could have done it up more.

I'd love for a big kitchen with a full size oven. I actually love to cook, esp for friends and family. I was quite happy cooking when I was an au pair..

But our apartment is SO small, there's hardly any room for makeover in the kitchen :(

Moi moi! My kitchen looks just as drap but my skills are as good or worse than yours. So let's save the trouble.

The lack of culinary / housewife-y skills in this department has been the major deterrent (aside from wondering whether we can make ends meet) to my staying home. bleahz. How? Got hope?

Oh my old kitchen was done up very nicely... big fridge, Corian top, oven + stove etc, lots of storage...

But I realised that you don't really need a complicated kitchen to be able to whip up stuff. A look at my mom's kitchen proves it.

At my current place storage space is woefully lacking. So it called for some serious relook at what was really necessary in order to run a kitchen. Well, we make do. A good wok and a solid non-stick pan (Calphalon!) would be nice though. Oh and an industrial size oven please!

Cooking takes practice and patience. I have no patience to do those 3-veg-1-soup Chinese kind of dinner. All my dinners are one-dish-meals. Only when friends come over do I bother with more complicated stuff. So far, recipients of my cooking have been quite happy with the results :)

yeah, one doesn't need a complicated kitchen to be able to whip up yummy food..for someone like me, even with a fab, well stocked kitchen, the end result would prob be the same ..awful :P

hmm,im so used to the 3 dishes fare (1 meat/1 veg/1 soup)..feels a bit weird if i cook any less and the prob is coming up with variety to last a fortnight..actually, for me, i can only do abt a week's worth w/out repeating..very siong man.

i guess you are probably good at doing non-chinese dishes..right?

Hey babe, you may not be a kitchen goddess YET, but mehtinks you're definitely a domestic goddess in many other ways ... pretty, great mummy, and loving wifey! There are definitely more ways to a man's heart than via his stomach lah! LOL!

Like you, I didn't reno the kitchen when I did up my place too. Erm, kitchen's don't exactly rank very highly for a bachelor lah. Now that I'm married, I kinda regret it. My next place definitely needs a bigger kitchen coz it's one of J's favourite places in the house. Anyway, the IKEA thingy looks interesting ... we'll check it out! Thanks for the tip! ;)

wahliao..so sweet lah u *shudder*. no wonder J kena hooked *grin*

Your place is rather new right? so the kitchen shouldn't be in a bad shape. Prob is that most kitchens nowadays are so small..i remember reading in the papers sometime back that some couples actually downsize or do away entirely with the kitchen when renovating their place..just wondering what they'll do when a kid comes along. :P
